ITAAS is an operational model where an enterprise IT organization is run much like a technology advisor, acting and operating as an internal service provider. In this model, IT simplifies and encourages service consumption, provides improved financial transparency for IT services, and partners more closely with lines of business. Lines of business have many options for IT services because external service providers also offer attractive options. Corporate (in-house) IT must transform to offer competitive services that are business focused rather than cost focused, leading directly to improved levels of business agility.

The IaaS layer offers storage and compute resources that developers and IT organizations can use to deliver business solutions. (e.g. AWS, Azure, Rackspace, Equinix)

The PaaS layer offers black-box services with which developers can build applications on top of the compute infrastructure. This might include developer tools that are offered as a service to build services, or data access and database services, or billing services. (e.g. Google App Engine, Cloud Foundry, OpenShift, Azure Cloud Service)

In the SaaS layer, the service provider hosts the software so you don’t need to install, manage, or buy hardware or software for the service. All you have to do is connect and use it. (e.g.,, Workday, Office 365)

Pay-as-you-go Pay for the resources (server, network, storage, application) that are consumed on a variable basis.

Elasticity Scale up resources as needed. Burst resource usage as dictated by business needs.

Optimal Resource Utilization Servers, storage and network resources are better utilized and are shared by multiple users

User-centric Self-service with the capability to rapidly deploy services at large scale

Increase IT agility & Operational efficiency Automating request fulfillment, automating deployment and scaling services on demand

Enhance Security & Compliance Protect and secure the business to deliver on enterprise SLAs in the cloud.

Better IT financial management Bring greater transparency to IT costs by establishing a new financial model for IT that more directly aligns business service costs to the business value delivered.
